Kurt Angle: 2022 Biography, Net Worth, Family, Income
Kurt Steven Angle, better known as simply Kurt Angle, is a retired professional wrestler, Olympic gold medalist, podcaster and actor. He was born in the Mt. Lebanon Township suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Angle didn’t wait long in life to get started in amateur wrestling, which he picked up from the age of seven, and soon began winning tournaments and championships in his home state.
Soon, Angle would go beyond Pennsylvania and start winning championships at a national level. By 1996, his amateur wrestling level would rise to international, as he succeeded in qualifying for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Despite fracturing two of his cervical vertebrae, herniating two discs, and pulling four muscles in his neck, Angle went on to win gold in heavyweight freestyle wrestling.
Angle’s amateur wrestling success soon attracted the eyes of the professional wrestling world. His first appearance on a pro wrestling show was for Extreme Championship Wrestling at the High Incident event in 1996. However, Angle would storm out of this show due to a controversial segment involving Raven and The Sandman, never to appear for the promotion again until it was revived by the WWE twenty years later.
By 1998, Angle got the itch to get involved in professional wrestling again and signed a five-year contract with the WWF. It was here Angle would prove that he was not only an exceptional talent in the amateur wrestling world, but in the pro world, too. After making his TV debut at Survivor Series 1999, it quickly became evident that Angle was picking up professional wrestling very fast. He developed at such an impressive rate that he was crowned WWF Champion in his rookie year, defeating The Rock at No Mercy 2000.
From hereon, Angle become part of some of the most famous and memorable storylines in all of WWF/E history. He would be an integral part of the WWF vs. WCW Invasion storyline, eventually being the catalyst which tipped the war in favour of team WWF. He would main event WrestleMania 19 against Brock Lesnar, and face a plethora of wrestling’s best in subsequent WrestleMania’s. These would include Eddie Guerrero, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton & Rey Mysterio. By the start of 2006, he was a six-time World Champion, barely seven years into his career.
In April of 2006, Angle was drafted to the aforementioned revival of ECW. He would remain there until August of the same year when he would request and receive his WWE release. Angle claims that his release request was down to health reasons, having worked with several serious injuries over the years.
It wasn’t long before Kurt Angle would resurface on the professional wrestling landscape, however, because in October 2006 he signed with Total Nonstop Action. TNA is where Angle would spend the majority of his professional wrestling career, entering and leaving the company as its biggest star. In his decade-long stay in TNA, Angle won a further five World Championships. His final World Title was won by defeating Bobby Lashley on the March 20th, 2015 edition of TNA’s flagship show Impact, in a match which Angle claims “saved his career.” While in TNA, Angle had some of the highest-rated matches of his career against the likes of Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Jeff Jarrett.
Kurt Angle left TNA in 2016, opting to spend a year on the independent circuit, where he wrestled names like Cody Rhodes, Joe Hendry and Zack Sabre Jr. After this year, it was announced that he and WWE had agreed upon a deal, leading to Angle being appointed as on-screen General Manager for Monday Night Raw on April 3rd, 2017. This was also the year when he would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for his contributions to wrestling.
He would wrestle a total of twenty-two more matches in WWE before losing to Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35 in his retirement match. After his retirement, Angle found himself a new role behind the scenes in WWE as a producer.
In recent years, Kurt Angle has made sporadic appearances on television for WWE, and even a one-off appearance for TNA at Slammiversary 2022. Unlike many wrestlers, Angle has not been tempted out of retirement, even after an offer of a ten-match deal from All Elite Wrestling. Outside of wrestling, he hosts a weekly podcast called “The Kurt Angle Show” with Conrad Thompson and Paul Bromwell.
